WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I am a first-generation American born in Miami, Florida. My momma and papa are originally from Honduras with some Italian heritage thrown in. I am fluent in Spanish since I grew up attending bilingual schools and speaking Spanish at home. Non parlo Italiano.
WHERE DID YOU GROW UP?
I graduated from Celebration High School (local to the Orlando area) and moved to New York City shortly after. I lived between the Upper West Side and Brooklyn for 5 years. Today, I’m back in the South just forty minutes north of Walt Disney World where I live with my husband R and our beloved husky, Riyah.
WHY DID YOU LEAVE NEW YORK?
My first break in the media world was as an Assistant Managing Editor earning $65,000 per year at a start-up. I *loved* my job because of the autonomy I had managing 15 teams remote teams and the brilliant people I worked alongside. After only a year, I quit with $10,000 in savings because I sensed things were taking a turn for the worse. In the search for a cure to burn-out, I decided to schlepp my stuff into storage and crash on my best friend’s couch in Orlando while applying to jobs in Colorado, L.A. and New York City. During this time, I was offered the role of Managing Editor at Relevant Magazine and decided to stay. What happened after that is another story entirely.
WHAT DO YOU DO FOR WORK NOW?
As a former editor for several media companies, I’ve done everything from managing writers, sourcing content, reporting on news, and building strategic community partnerships. I’ve enjoyed my time developing other writers and traveling for work the most.
Now I freelance as a writer, consult brands in the area of change management communications, and manage the blog you see here.
WHERE DID YOU GO TO SCHOOL?
I began my undergraduate education at Fordham University at Lincoln Center in New York City. I left before completing my Bachelor’s degree in order to avoid taking on student loans and continued building my career without it.
WHEN DID YOU START BLOGGING?
This blog is the culmination of a few abandoned websites before it (RIP Pearl+Salt) and over a decade of oversharing online beginning with a little website called Livejournal. I’ve always written in some form or another and have over 20 journals in a dresser filled with spilled ink.
HOW DID YOU MEET R?
R and I have tangentially known each other since high school. We had mutual friends and went to the same church but it wasn’t until we were both home for the holidays years later that we caught each other by surprise—I was working in media in NYC, he was finishing up his Master’s in Digital Media at Florida State University, we began a conversation in 2015 and have not stopped talking since.
WHAT RELIGION DO YOU IDENTIFY WITH?
This is always a hard question for me to answer. I don’t subscribe to a particular church or denomination but I regard Jesus as a friend, my north star, and indeed my savior. I suppose I qualify as a progressive Christian although I don’t really use the term.
If I’m speaking about my faith at its most reductive state: I read the Bible for its comfort and eternal wisdom, I don’t subscribe to biblical literalism, I’m working out how to live that truth without being a weirdo or a jerk about it, and the Holy Spirit and I are homies.
WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?
I enjoy catching up with friends, writing snail mail, and shopping for birthday or Christmas gifts when seasonally appropriate. I also follow a ton of groups that discuss pop-culture in a critically-educated way, which I cherish listening in on. Naps, travel, and teaching myself how to cook without hating it fits the list.
